Thierry Saegeman is a Belgian energy executive with a long-standing career at ENGIE, known for combining operational leadership, industrial expertise and strategic execution across nuclear, thermal and renewable businesses. Since 2024, he has served as ENGIE’s Executive Vice President in charge of Transformation and Geographies, nuclear production and Tractebel, while also sitting within the Group’s top governance framework. In addition, he holds board-level responsibilities at Electrabel and serves on KLM’s Supervisory Board, where he chairs the Audit Committee. He earned a master’s degree in electromechanical engineering from Ghent University in 1994 and completed an MBA at the Vlerick Leuven-Ghent Management School in 1995. His career began in 1995 at ENGIE Electrabel, where he worked first as a combined heat and power project manager and then as a developer of renewable energy projects. These early responsibilities gave him direct exposure to energy assets, project economics and the technical and regulatory dimensions of power generation. Saegeman later moved to France, where he held senior leadership roles within the ENGIE Group. He served as Managing Director of ENGIE Thermal France and subsequently as CEO of Compagnie Nationale du Rhône. In that role, he was responsible for hydropower operations, energy management and the development of wind and solar projects. This period broadened his expertise across low-carbon generation, portfolio optimization and infrastructure development, and strengthened his profile as an executive able to manage both regulated assets and growth-oriented renewable businesses. He returned to Belgium in 2016 as Chief Nuclear Officer, taking on responsibilities in one of the most technically and institutionally sensitive areas of the energy sector. In 2021, he became Country Manager of ENGIE Belgium, further consolidating his leadership role within the Group. His appointment in 2024 to a Group-wide transformation role reflects ENGIE’s confidence in his operational judgment, negotiation skills and deep knowledge of European energy markets. Overall, Saegeman’s career reflects a rare combination of engineering training, business acumen and executive experience across the major segments of the energy transition.
