Pierre-André de Chalendar is one of the leading figures in French industry and in the governance of listed companies. Born on April 12, 1958, and educated at ESSEC and the École nationale d’administration, he began his career in the French civil service as an inspector of finance, then at the Ministry of Industry and Energy. That background gave him an unusually strong grasp of public policy, industrial strategy and macroeconomic trade-offs, which later proved highly valuable in the private sector. He joined Compagnie de Saint-Gobain in 1989 as Vice-President, Corporate Planning, starting a long and steady rise within the group. At Saint-Gobain, he held a series of important operating and strategic roles across businesses and geographies: head of abrasives in Europe, then worldwide, general delegate for the United Kingdom and Ireland, and later head of the Building Distribution sector in 2003. He was appointed deputy CEO in 2005, CEO in 2007 and Chairman and CEO in 2010. His tenure at the helm of Saint-Gobain was defined by a major strategic transformation: portfolio simplification, a stronger focus on higher value-added markets, and further internationalization of the group. In 2021, he oversaw the governance transition that separated the roles of chairman and chief executive officer, before stepping down as chairman in 2024 and becoming Chairman Emeritus of Saint-Gobain. Beyond Saint-Gobain, he has become a highly respected board director in French corporate governance. He has served on the board of Veolia Environnement since 2021, where he chairs the Nominations Committee, sits on the Compensation Committee and the Purpose Committee, and is recognized as senior independent director. In 2023, he joined the board of Bpifrance, reflecting his expertise in economic policy, finance and sustainable development. In 2025, FORVIA appointed him as observer to its board, with a possible future chairmanship in view. His profile combines industrial leadership, governance discipline, long-term strategic judgment and strong credibility on transformation, transition and value creation.
