Antoine Frérot is one of the best-known figures in French corporate leadership, particularly in environmental services, utility infrastructure, and large-scale industrial transformation. Born on June 3, 1958 in Fontainebleau, he graduated from École Polytechnique (class of 1977), became an engineer in the Ponts et Chaussées corps, and earned a doctorate from the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées. That strong engineering background has shaped his management style: long-term thinking, a systems-based view of industrial performance, and a clear focus on essential infrastructure and the public interest. He began his career in 1981 as a research engineer before joining Saint-Gobain, where he held a series of senior leadership roles over many years. He served as vice-president and later president of business divisions, and in 2003 he was appointed Senior Vice-President in charge of the Building Distribution sector. He then became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Saint-Gobain from 2007 to 2010. This experience in a major global industrial group gave him deep expertise in portfolio management, international leadership, operational discipline, and large-scale organizational change. At Veolia, Antoine Frérot became a central executive figure from January 2003, when he was appointed CEO of Veolia Water and Deputy CEO of Veolia Environnement. He later moved to the top of the group, becoming Chief Executive Officer in 2009 and Chairman and CEO in December 2010. Under his leadership, Veolia underwent a major strategic transformation: the group refocused its portfolio, progressively exited transportation, and strengthened its position in water, waste, and energy. He also helped reposition Veolia around resource management, circular economy principles, and decarbonization. Another hallmark of his tenure has been the emphasis on corporate purpose, with Veolia formally articulating its raison d’être as part of its long-term identity. Since 2022, he has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Veolia Environnement, while also chairing the Purpose Committee and serving on the Nominations Committee. His current role is centered on governance, strategic oversight, and continuity of the group’s long-term direction, while the chief executive function is held by Estelle Brachlianoff. His career illustrates a rare combination of engineering rigor, industrial credibility, and leadership in a sector where financial performance must be balanced with climate, social, and territorial priorities.
