Paul Dubrule is one of the key figures in French and global hospitality. Born in Tourcoing in 1934, he belongs to the generation of entrepreneurs who helped reshape the European hotel industry in the second half of the 20th century. His name is closely associated with Gérard Pélisson, with whom he co-founded the SIEH group in 1967, the business that later became Novotel and, ultimately, Accor. According to Accor’s own history, Dubrule and Pélisson disrupted the conservative French hotel market by creating a modern, standardized and scalable model that would become a global benchmark.
Within the group, Paul Dubrule held leading responsibilities during the company’s founding and expansion phases. His contribution was decisive in building a hospitality model based on service standardization, strong brand consistency and the rollout of hotel concepts designed for different customer segments. This strategy supported Novotel’s growth and the broader expansion of Accor, which went on to become one of the world’s leading hospitality groups. Accor’s historical materials highlight that the journey began with the opening of the first Novotel in Lille in 1967.
Beyond the industrial and strategic dimensions, Dubrule stood out for his highly operational understanding of hospitality, combining financial discipline, product design and a strong service culture. He helped establish reproducible quality standards, a crucial factor in the development of an international hotel network. His role was that of a builder and long-term strategist, rather than a purely executive figure, with a lasting influence on the group’s governance and identity. Accor’s corporate documents still refer to him as a co-founder of the group.
His career also extended beyond Accor. Paul Dubrule served in public office as a senator for Seine-et-Marne from 1999 to 2004 and as mayor of Fontainebleau from 1992 to 2000. He also made a notable contribution to hospitality education through the creation of a school in Siem Reap, Cambodia. His trajectory reflects a rare combination of entrepreneurship, sector leadership and public service.
