About LORENZO BINI SMAGHI
Lorenzo Bini Smaghi is an Italian economist and banker best known for serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Société Générale, a role he has held since 2015. He earned a degree in economics from the Université catholique de Louvain and later completed a PhD in economics at the University of Chicago. His academic background, combined with senior institutional experience, has given him a strong command of monetary policy, financial regulation, and corporate governance. Before joining the French banking group, Bini Smaghi held high-level positions in European monetary institutions. Most notably, he served on the Executive Board of the European Central Bank from 2005 to 2011, participating in major policy decisions during the global financial crisis and the euro-area sovereign debt turmoil. He also worked within the Bank of Italy and contributed to various economic and policy forums, building a reputation as a seasoned expert on markets, inflation, interest rates, and the architecture of Europe’s financial system. At Société Générale, he became an important figure in the group’s governance framework. Appointed an independent director in 2014, he was named Chairman of the Board in May 2015, following the separation of the chairman and chief executive roles. This change marked an important step in strengthening the bank’s governance structure. His background as a former central banker has been particularly valuable in overseeing a systemically important institution facing demanding expectations around capital, compliance, risk management, and strategic adaptation to a tougher regulatory environment. Bini Smaghi’s credibility also stems from his international career and his ability to connect macroeconomic analysis with corporate oversight.
