Abilio Dos Santos Diniz (1936–2024) was one of the most influential retail leaders in Brazil and a highly regarded board-level executive in listed companies. Educated at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), where he earned a degree in business administration, he developed early expertise in distribution, consumer behavior, and corporate governance. He first became widely known through Grupo Pão de Açúcar, the family business he co-founded with his father. There, he served as chairman of the board from 1993 to 2013 and helped turn the company into a leading retail group in Latin America. Diniz’s career extended well beyond supermarkets. He chaired the board of BRF from 2013 to 2018, strengthening his profile in food, agribusiness, and consumer goods. He also led Península, the family investment holding company, which gave him a strategic platform for long-term capital allocation and active ownership. Over time, he became known not only as a retailer, but also as an investor, strategist, and governance specialist with deep experience in public companies, shareholder structures, and international expansion. At Carrefour, Diniz brought a distinctive combination of retail know-how, strategic insight, and governance discipline. Carrefour described him as a seasoned retail professional with strong knowledge of consumer goods, global strategy, private equity, and listed-company governance. Appointed first as an observer and then as a board member in 2016, he later served as director and vice-chairman of the strategic committee. In that capacity, he contributed to discussions on the group’s Brazilian business, financial discipline, and the alignment of local execution with long-term corporate priorities. He was also a teacher and mentor. Since 2010, he taught “Leadership 360°” at FGV, reflecting a lasting commitment to leadership development and executive education. His legacy is that of an entrepreneur who combined operating experience, strategic thinking, and a strong sense of governance across some of the most important retail and food companies in Brazil and beyond.
