René Lacerte is an American technology entrepreneur and the founder, Chief Executive Officer, and a member of the board of directors of BILL (BILL Holdings, Inc.), a U.S.-listed company focused on automating financial operations for small and midsize businesses. He has served as CEO since founding the company in April 2006 and has been a board member since inception. His career spans finance, software, and payments, with more than 30 years of experience in those industries. Before launching BILL, he founded PayCycle in 1999, an online payroll solution that became one of the early leaders in its category and was later acquired by Intuit in 2009. Earlier in his career, he spent five years at Intuit, where he helped grow the company’s bill payment and credit card businesses and launched Intuit’s first connected payroll product. Under his leadership, BILL evolved from a startup created to simplify payments and reduce paper-based processes into a public company in 2019 with a broad role in the financial technology ecosystem. Lacerte’s strategy has centered on removing friction from financial workflows so business owners, finance teams, banks, and accounting firms can operate more efficiently. During his tenure, BILL expanded its platform and executed notable acquisitions including Divvy, Invoice2Go, and Finmark, which strengthened the company’s capabilities in spend management, invoicing, and financial planning. His work has been recognized through industry honors, including awards from Ernst & Young and repeated inclusion on Accounting Today’s list of the most influential people in accounting. A Stanford graduate, he earned both an M.S. in industrial engineering and a B.A. in quantitative economics.
