About Jean-Michel BERARD
Jean-Michel Bérard is the founder of Esker, a leading company in document and financial process automation, which he created in Lyon in 1985 shortly after graduating as an engineer from INSA Lyon. He has remained the most closely associated executive figure in the company’s history. As Chairman of the Executive Board, he defines and executes Esker’s strategy with the support of the management team. He also oversees the Asia-Pacific subsidiaries to maintain direct contact with customers and prospects in emerging markets, and he represents Esker to the financial community, IT analysts, and the press. Bérard’s career is inseparable from Esker’s transformation from a French software startup into an international cloud-based automation specialist. The company was founded around the original concept of “European Software Kernel,” and under his leadership it expanded abroad early in the 1990s, then listed on the Paris Stock Exchange in 1997 to support acquisitions and scale-up. Over time, Esker evolved into a global provider of digital workflow automation, helping organizations improve order-to-cash and procure-to-pay processes and modernize paper-heavy operations through cloud, AI, and automation technologies. A hallmark of Jean-Michel Bérard’s leadership has been strategic continuity combined with disciplined growth. Esker’s annual report notes that the company’s management team was gradually built under his leadership, reflecting a long-term entrepreneurial approach rather than short-term management turnover. His responsibilities extend beyond internal execution: he has been central to investor communication, external visibility, and the company’s international development. He has also received several business awards, including the 2013 Engineer Entrepreneur of the Year award from L’Usine Nouvelle, as well as EY Entrepreneur of the Year distinctions for the Rhône-Alpes region in 2000 and 2013, and for France in 2000. Today, Jean-Michel Bérard stands out as a rare example of a founder-CEO still leading a listed French technology company, with a lasting impact on Esker’s governance, innovation agenda, and international positioning.
