Stéphane Michel is a senior French executive at TotalEnergies SE, where he has served since March 1, 2021 as President of the Gas, Renewables & Power division and as a member of the Executive Committee. Born on February 17, 1973, he graduated from École Polytechnique in 1994 and École des Mines de Paris in 1997, and is a Chief Engineer of the Corps des Mines. His career combines technical depth, public-policy experience and international management exposure, which has positioned him as one of the key executives behind TotalEnergies’ transformation into a broad energy company. Before joining TotalEnergies, Michel worked from 2002 to 2004 as technical adviser in charge of energy to the French Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry, giving him direct experience with energy policy, regulation and government decision-making. He joined the company in 2005, initially handling business development for the Refining & Marketing Asia-Pacific division in Singapore. He then moved into a series of senior roles across the Middle East and North Africa: in 2008 he became Joint Venture and Business Development Manager for TotalEnergies E&P Qatar, in 2010 Managing Director of TotalEnergies E&P Libya, and in 2011 Managing Director of TotalEnergies E&P Qatar. On April 1, 2014, he was appointed Senior Vice President for the Middle East/North Africa region within the Exploration & Production segment. Since 2021, Michel has been responsible for one of TotalEnergies’ most strategic growth platforms, overseeing gas, renewables and power activities at a time when the company has been accelerating its shift toward integrated energy systems. His remit has included expanding LNG and gas value chains, scaling renewable power, supporting biomethane initiatives, and advancing offshore wind and international partnerships. He is widely seen as an executive with strong strategic judgment, operational discipline and a deep understanding of global energy markets.
