Patrick Pouyanné is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies SE, one of the world’s leading integrated energy companies. Born on June 24, 1963, he is a graduate of École Polytechnique and a Chief Engineer of France’s Corps des Mines. He began his career in the French public sector, holding several positions at the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Environment, as well as cabinet roles, including technical adviser to Prime Minister Édouard Balladur and later chief of staff to the minister responsible for information and aerospace technologies. He joined Total in January 1997 within the Exploration & Production division, first as Chief Administrative Officer in Angola, then as the company’s representative in Qatar and President of the local exploration and production subsidiary. These assignments gave him deep operational exposure to upstream energy activities, international project execution and leadership in complex geopolitical environments. In 2002, he was appointed President of Finance, Economy and IT for Exploration & Production. Four years later, he became Senior Vice President for Strategy, Business Development and R&D, strengthening his reputation as a leader capable of combining operational discipline with long-term strategic thinking. In 2011, his responsibilities expanded into downstream activities when he became Deputy General Manager for Chemicals and Petrochemicals. In 2012, he was appointed President of Refining & Chemicals. On October 22, 2014, he became Chief Executive Officer of Total S.A., and in December 2015 he was appointed Chairman of the Board, combining the two top leadership roles. Under his leadership, the group underwent a major strategic repositioning, including the move from Total to TotalEnergies, reflecting a broader ambition to become a multi-energy company spanning oil, gas, electricity, renewables and low-carbon solutions. Pouyanné is widely regarded for his strong capital allocation discipline, industrial vision and ability to lead a large listed company through a fast-changing energy landscape. He has also been a visible advocate of governance quality, climate transition, sustainable performance and education initiatives. Through his leadership at TotalEnergies and his involvement in several boards and associations, he remains one of the most influential French corporate executives.
