Éric Vivier is a French immunologist with an international reputation, best known as a co-founder of Innate Pharma and as one of the scientific leaders who helped shape the company’s research strategy. He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the École Nationale Vétérinaire de Maisons-Alfort and a PhD in Immunology from Paris XI University. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School, at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, he joined the Centre d’Immunologie de Marseille-Luminy (CIML) in 1993. There, he established a major research program focused on Natural Killer (NK) cells and, more broadly, on innate immunity. He later directed the CIML from 2008 to 2017 and has held professorial appointments at Aix-Marseille University and the Marseille Public Hospitals system. At Innate Pharma, which was founded in 1999 by a group of immunology pioneers, Vivier became Chief Scientific Officer in January 2018. In that role, he led the company’s research organization, including the identification of new therapeutic targets, translational research, and drug-candidate development. His contribution was especially important in positioning Innate Pharma around immuno-oncology and NK-cell-based therapies, reflecting his longstanding ability to bridge academic science and industrial innovation. Vivier’s research has played a decisive role in advancing the understanding of NK-cell development and function, as well as in the discovery of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs). He has authored a large body of scientific work and is widely recognized as one of the most cited researchers in his field. Beyond Innate Pharma, he co-founded and coordinated Marseille Immunopôle, an immunology cluster designed to accelerate therapeutic innovation and industrial development. In 2025, Innate Pharma stated that he would return to full-time academic research while continuing to support the company as an advisor to the Board’s R&D Committee, underscoring the continued relevance of his scientific leadership to the business.
