Thomas Buberl is the Chief Executive Officer of AXA, one of the world’s leading insurance and asset management groups. He has held this role since September 2016, after first joining AXA in 2012 as CEO of AXA Germany and a member of the Group Executive Committee. His board mandate was renewed for four years at the 2022 Annual Shareholders’ Meeting, and in April 2025 AXA’s Board announced its intention to propose the renewal of his mandate again in 2026, with the aim of reappointing him as CEO.
Before leading AXA, Thomas Buberl built a strong international career in consulting and insurance. He began at Boston Consulting Group, where he focused on banking and insurance. In 2005, he joined Winterthur Group as Chief Operating Officer and later Chief Marketing and Distribution Officer. After Winterthur was acquired by AXA in 2006, he continued to develop within the insurance industry and became CEO of Zurich Insurance Group for Switzerland in 2008. This background gave him deep expertise in strategy, distribution, operational transformation, and the management of regulated businesses with significant capital and risk requirements.
At AXA, Buberl progressively took on broader responsibilities at Group level. In 2015, he was appointed CEO of the Global Health business line, and in January 2016 he took charge of the Global Life & Savings business line. He then served as Deputy CEO before becoming Group CEO later that year. Under his leadership, AXA has undertaken a major strategic transformation, refocusing the Group on its core insurance businesses and reducing sensitivity to financial risk while strengthening the balance sheet. AXA’s Board has highlighted the benefits of this transformation and the Group’s solid 2024 results as evidence of resilience and future growth potential. Buberl also serves on AXA’s Board of Directors and holds governance roles in major international companies, underscoring his standing as a prominent executive in European listed-company governance.
