Philippe Houzé is a leading figure in French retail and in the governance of major listed and family-controlled companies. At Carrefour, he currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors, after having been Lead Director until April 2020. He is also a member of the Audit Committee, the Governance Committee and the Strategic Committee. He has served as a Carrefour director since June 11, 2015, and was reappointed in 2021. His role at Carrefour reflects deep experience in retail, corporate governance and long-term strategic oversight. Born on November 27, 1947, Philippe Houzé is Chairman of the Executive Board of Galeries Lafayette Group, one of France’s most prominent family-owned retail groups. His career was built first at Monoprix, where he became Chief Executive Officer in 1982 and then Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1994, a position he held until November 2012. During that period, he helped transform Monoprix into a benchmark urban retailer, strengthening its presence in city centers and combining food retail, fashion and beauty in a distinctive format. His commercial, marketing and fashion-sector expertise became one of his defining professional assets. Within Galeries Lafayette Group, he served as co-chairman from 1998 to 2004 and became Chairman of the Executive Board in 2005. Under his leadership, the group pursued a strategy focused on omnichannel retail, innovation and responsible commerce, while promoting the French “art of living.” He also played a key role in major corporate moves, including Motier SAS’s significant acquisition of Carrefour shares in 2014, and the acquisition of a 51% stake in La Redoute in 2017, followed by the remaining shares in 2022. These transactions underline his ability to combine family ownership priorities with disciplined strategic execution. Beyond operational leadership, Philippe Houzé is recognized for his commitment to urban regeneration, sustainable development, contemporary art and education. He is Chairman of the Board of ESCP Business School, sits on the INSEAD Board of Directors, and is an elected member of the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
