François Pérol is a well-known figure in French banking and senior public administration, now associated with Rothschild & Co. A graduate of HEC, Sciences Po Paris and a former student at the École Nationale d’Administration (ENA), he began his career in 1990 at the French General Inspectorate of Finance, a traditional starting point for top officials who later move into leading economic roles. From 1994 to 2001, he held a series of positions within the French Treasury, including responsibilities relating to financial markets, corporate financing and sovereign debt negotiations. He later served as deputy chief of staff to Francis Mer and then to Nicolas Sarkozy at the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry, which gave him a strong exposure to high-level economic policy and financial decision-making. Pérol joined Rothschild & Cie in 2005 as a general partner, before moving in May 2007 to the French Presidency as deputy secretary general in charge of economic affairs. In 2009, he was appointed head of Groupe BPCE, the banking group created from the merger of the Caisses d’Épargne and Banques Populaires networks, a role he held for nearly nine years. During that period, he was at the center of a major mutual-banking consolidation effort, with significant governance, financial-stability and commercial development challenges. He returned to Rothschild & Co in 2018, when he was appointed Managing Partner of Rothschild & Co Gestion. He also became Co-Chairman of the Group Executive Committee and Managing Partner of Rothschild Martin Maurel and Rothschild & Cie. In that role, he brings together two complementary areas of expertise: deep knowledge of the state apparatus and strong experience in investment banking and wealth management. His career reflects an ability to lead complex institutions, balance strategy with regulation, and drive long-term transformation. He remains closely associated with corporate governance in French financial circles and with Rothschild & Co’s role in the Paris market.
