Benoît Potier is one of the most prominent figures in French listed-company governance and has been closely associated with Air Liquide for decades. A graduate of École centrale de Paris, he joined Air Liquide in 1981 as a research and development engineer. This early immersion in innovation shaped the rest of his career and his management style: a combination of industrial rigor, strategic discipline, and a long-term investment mindset. He later moved through a series of operational and strategic roles, including project management in Engineering & Construction, Vice President of Energy Development in Large Industries, and senior responsibilities in strategy, organization, and key industrial markets such as chemicals, metals, steel, oil, and energy. His rise within the group was steady and consequential. He became Chief Executive in 1997, joined the Board in 2000, and was appointed Chairman of the Management Board in 2001. In May 2006, he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Liquide, a role he held until May 2022. Since June 1, 2022, he has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors, supporting the company’s management transition. During his executive tenure, Air Liquide underwent a major transformation: the group more than doubled in size and its market capitalization increased fivefold. He also strengthened the company’s international footprint, notably through the 2016 acquisition and integration of Airgas. Potier helped position Air Liquide at the center of high-priority future markets: healthcare, digital technologies, and the environmental and energy transition, with particular emphasis on hydrogen. Beyond Air Liquide, he has played an influential role in organizations such as the European Round Table of Industrialists, the Hydrogen Council, and France’s National Hydrogen Council. His profile combines industrial leadership, international perspective, expertise in corporate transformation, and a strong commitment to sustainability and transition technologies.
