Alexandre Bompard is one of the best-known French executives in retail. He has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Carrefour since July 2017, leading a global group operating in more than 40 countries. Under his leadership, Carrefour has pursued a deep transformation focused on competitiveness, omnichannel retail, and the food transition. In July 2025, Carrefour’s Board of Directors proposed renewing his mandate and indicated its intention to reappoint him as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at the 2026 Annual General Meeting, underscoring his central role in the company’s strategy. Bompard graduated from Sciences Po Paris and the École nationale d’administration (ENA). He began his career in the French civil service, working at the Inspection générale des finances, before moving into ministerial advisory roles. He later shifted into the private sector, building experience in media and telecommunications first at Canal+ and then as Chairman and CEO of Europe 1 from 2008 to 2010. This background gave him broad exposure to large organizations, public-facing brands, and complex stakeholder environments. Before joining Carrefour, he led Fnac from 2010 onward and later oversaw the creation of Fnac Darty after Fnac’s acquisition of Darty. That period established his reputation as a restructuring-oriented and deal-savvy executive, capable of steering integration projects and value-creation strategies. At Carrefour, he has extended that profile by driving operational improvement, strengthening the price proposition, accelerating digital and e-commerce capabilities, and embedding ESG priorities into the group’s strategic agenda. Carrefour has highlighted his contribution to repositioning the company as a leader in food transition while reinforcing its financial strength and investment capacity. Among his notable achievements are the group’s strategic refocusing, the acceleration of omnichannel capabilities, investment in new consumer behaviors, and the integration of sustainability into core corporate strategy. Carrefour also points to initiatives under his leadership in data, retail media, and commercial innovation. Overall, Bompard has built a profile as a high-profile transformation leader with deep experience in managing large-scale change in highly competitive consumer sectors.
