Rodolphe Saadé is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CMA CGM, one of the world’s leading shipping and logistics groups, headquartered in Marseille. The son of founder Jacques Saadé, he joined the family business in 1994 after first building entrepreneurial experience in the Middle East through a water-cooler venture. He began his career at CMA CGM in the United States, later worked in Hong Kong, and then returned to Marseille to head a shipping line linking Northern China and Japan. From 1997 to 2000, he successively led several shipping lines, gaining deep operational exposure to global trade flows and maritime networks. A defining moment in his early leadership came in 2008, when he led negotiations during the hijacking of the Le Ponant yacht, helping secure the release of the hostages. In 2009, he took responsibility for the group’s financial restructuring, and in 2015–2016 he successfully led the voluntary tender offer for Neptune Orient Lines (NOL), a transaction that materially strengthened CMA CGM’s global reach. He was appointed Chief Executive Officer in 2017 and later became Chairman and CEO as part of a governance transition decided by the family and the board. Since taking the helm, Saadé has steered CMA CGM through a period of accelerated transformation. His leadership has emphasized diversification beyond shipping into logistics, air cargo, and media, alongside a strong focus on innovation and industrial sovereignty. He notably backed the adoption of LNG propulsion for ultra-large container vessels, a pioneering move in the industry, and supported innovation platforms such as ZEBOX. Under his leadership, CMA CGM has reinforced its global footprint, expanded strategic partnerships, and positioned itself as a major player in the energy transition and the resilience of international supply chains, while maintaining a strong French identity.
